About rascal: Rascal ACCT-A-210925 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Rascal must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by Monday, January 20th by 10:00 am. Should Rascal?s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging an animal. Meet Rascal, a young pup who is looking for placement with an adopter or rescue partner to help him decompress and build up his trust. This pup is about a year and a half old and was brought to ACCT by Animal Control Officers on 1/8 after being left behind with a feline companion in an apartment. Upon evaluation, we noted that Rascal shows some resource guarding with food but does well with trading for treats or toys! He is greatly motivated by treats and with a little time and lots of baby talk, opens up from his initial nervousness. At first he can be a bit unsure with new people and surroundings. With some time he starts opening up and will curl up against you for pets and cuddles. He does best with short bursts of handling and absolutely loves any praise you give him! Due to his nervousness and resource guarding, Rascal is looking for placement without children. While at the shelter, he has had a good and bad meet with other dogs and shows some selectivity/reactivity. He would do best with slow introductions if there are any resident dogs in the home. Despite his nervousness, this young pup is ready to put his best paw forward and show you how sweet he can be! MEDICAL NOTES: On 1/10 was given a PCR test and came back negative for Pneumovirus. On 1/10 per exam: Rascal has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They have been started on medication, and will be monitored for resolution of the respiratory infection. On 1/9 was given a Snap Pravo Test that came back negative. On 1/9 per intake exam: Upon examination Rascal?s eyes, nose, and mobility was clear and normal. Ears were a little waxy but could not thoroughly be examined due to behavior. Mouth, teeth, and gums were unable to be examined due to behavior. Coat and skin noted to have feces on the coat, scratch next to the right eye, and a small wound next to the left eye. Overall, was timid during the exam, and generally was underweight and presenting with diarrhea. BEHAVIOR NOTES: On 1/14 per walk sheet notes: No issues removing or re-entering the kennel, did not display any mouthing, jumping, or shyness while on the walk. Does pull a little but gives lots of check-ins, very behaved. Let me touch him and his paws, overall nice pup. On 1/10 per staff: Could not obtain pneumovirus PCR due to reactivity. Patient reacted strongly to nasal swab, and upon attempting oral swab, patient began growling. On 1/9 per staff: Rascal did not do great for his dog meet today. He initially growled when the two got face to face, so we decided to do a fence meet. He was uninterested in the other dog through the fence, so we went back to a face meet. Rascal did not growl the second time but was still quite stiff and had raised hackles. He would need VERY slow intros to other dogs. On 1/9 per staff: Per other staff member, during intake Rascal was very tense and was growling and side eyeing the nurse. He was fine with his main handler, but got reactive anytime she approached. On 1/9 per staff: Per staff member, Rascal was reactive in kennel when passing out enrichment On 1/9 per staff: When displaying guarding behavior, he has easily done trades for treats or other toys! On 1/9 per staff: BEHAVIOR EVALUATION KNOWN HISTORY: Stray KENNEL PRESENTATION: Rascal was laying on his bed and looked up with soft eyes and a wagging tail. Patient for leashing and came right out of kennel without issue. No issues returning. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimal to moderate HANDLING : In the room Rascal walked around the room with mid level wags. He seemed a bit unsure at times raising his hackles and lip licking but would continue to approach us and warmed up with time! He allowed all over handling giving mid level wags while curling against us while petting him. At other times he would stiffen when petting him, stop wagging but remained tolerant. He did best with small spurts of handling and lots of praise. He is very food motivated but did display resource guarding while out. While chewing on a lickmat he was very snatchy and stiff when a handler approached from face on but did not escalate. However when touching him at all while he ate it he would freeze, growl, and hard stare. PLAY: Stiff, avoids TOYS: Accepted trades, destructive with toys Was stiff when approaching and would pay keep away, but did not outright guard toys COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS: Exp Blue On 1/8 per staff: Very friendly, easy to leash, walk & pick up.
