About reeses pieces: Reeses Pieces ACCT-A-212631 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Reeses Pieces must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2ND at 10AM. Should Reeses Pieces?s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Reeses Pieces is a playful, toy-obsessed pup who brings joy wherever he goes! Whether it?s a rope toy, stuffed animal, or ball, he?s happiest when he has something to toss around. He also loves zooming around the yard and getting booty scratches?which make him do the silliest little splits! This friendly boy greets everyone with soft eyes, happy wags, and polite sniffs, though he would do best in a home without young children. He takes treats gently, knows ?sit,? and seems to be trying to stay housetrained.
Originally found as a stray on February 4th, Reeses Pieces spent a few weeks at the shelter before moving to a short-term foster home. His foster initially planned to keep him just overnight but ended up extending his stay for a few weeks because of how great he was! Since returning from foster, the stress of the shelter has caused some behavioral deterioration. He has shown selectivity with other dogs, likely worsened by his stress. This led to an incident during playgroup, and now he tends to fixate on other dogs, even when they?re not nearby. Due to his behavioral concerns, Reeses Pieces is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:Per volunteer 3/30: Wonderful, sweet, friendly boy! No issues - pulls hard at first.
Per staff 3/28: Took Reese?s out with a new gold volunteer. He was very stressed in his kennel when we approached, was repeatedly pawing to get out while being leashed and pulled very strongly through the shelter. He was not attentive to his handler during this time. Once outside, he immediately was attracted to the yard with another dog in it. He had a high tail with stiff body and was pulling the volunteer along the fence. He was very fixated on the other dog and tried nipping the other dogs face multiple times. He was not able to be redirected and had to be pulled into the opposing yard. Once in the yard, he continued to fixate on every dog that walked by and remained hyper vigilant and was searching for dogs the entire time outside. He did not solicit attention from either handler and was not able to be redirected. He would also bite and pull the fence to get to other dogs.
He displayed signs of prey drive by charging birds that would land in the yard. He remained stressed and panting for at least 10 minutes with no dogs in any surrounding yard or in the outside area. After about 20 minutes outside, he did calm a bit and starting being attentive to his handler. He sat for treats, allowed petting, and his panting slowed down. His eyes were extremely red the whole time outside. He remained this way until another dog came outside and he went back to being extremely stressed. When exiting the yard, another dog was in the opposing yard, and he fixated on the other dog and immediately shot out of the yard towards the other dog and his leash slipped out of the volunteers hand. Luckily he was between secure fences so was able to be brought back into the shelter. He walked pretty well back to the shelter and was able to be placed back in kennel without issue.
Per volunteer 3/27: Playful, loves toys, medium energy, had a fence meet with a wagging tail! Fun loving! Wants to play with toys! Loves to play with toys!
Per staff 3/26: Strong + pulls!
Per staff 3/25: Slightly strong on leash, playgful.
Per staff 3/24: Reeses seemed assertive but playful at the gate and was let in without a muzzle. He charged the other male in the yard but stopped to greet him and did not aggress. After a few more seconds, he started getting aroused and mounted the other male dog who tried to get away. Reeses would not stop and the other dog growled and gave a correction which caused Reeses to snarl and repeatedly try to latch onto his neck. It took 3 handlers to break up the fight as Reeses would not stop going for the other dog and had to be choked with his collar to get off the other dog.
Per day trip 3/24: Just wanted to let you know what a good boy RP was on his trip. He sits in a car very calmly. He loved his 3 mile hike and could?ve kept walking all day I think. He pulled lightly, seemingly just out of excitement, but was quick to slow down if we whistled or gave a light tug on the leash. He knew and obeyed sit, stay, and leave it. He did get very excited when he saw other dogs, but his whimper and happy wag suggested it was more out of curiosity and wanting to play than anything. We didn?t get close enough to other dogs to know for sure though. After our hike we drove through fast food then parked to eat. RP did not make a single attempt to take food until it was offered to him, and even then he took food very gently. A very good boy for sure.
Per volunteer 3/23: Curious, took treats nicely. Peed and pooped.
Per staff 2/23: Saw a passing dog while in yard - very curious, interested in investigating. Tolerated all handling - met 3 new volunteers, relaxed, wiggly, playful.
Per volunteer 3/23: He came right to the front when I approached his kennel and he allowed me to leash easily and stepped right out. Pulls moderately so would recommend a harness. Pretty energetic in the play yard and loved to romp around! He is very treat motivated and knows sit, takes treats pretty gently. We did the photo shoot and he was great even with so many people around. He allowed me to put a hat on him and sat nicely for a photo. He enjoyed romping and chasing a tennis ball around. Took pets from me, but not overly affectionate.
Per short term foster sitter 3/15: He was great!!! He barely barks, he barks when the doorbell rings, and is curious with other noises outside, but does not bark!
He is a good runner, pulls on leash a bit, but overall a good walker!
Per foster 2/26: RP is as playful as ever! He's trying to say housetrained and in good spirits at the shelter. He?s a little snatchy with toys, but he loves chasing tennis balls and stuffies, especially shaking them around. He loves playing so much that he even picked out the plastic cone in the yard as a tug-of-war option. He?s still learning to share and give you the ball back after you throw it, but in time he could learn some manners and be a great playmate. He knows sit and takes treats nicely.
Per foster 2/24: Reeses Pieces is doing great! He is such a sweet boy that lovesss attention and is perfectly content cuddling on the couch all afternoon (after a long walk of course). He appears to be fully house trained and very responsive to basic commands (sit, stay, here, etc.) He is so concerned about everything, but in quite an endearing way. He was very worried about my roommate when she closed her bedroom door, and started crying when we passed a kid crying while on our walk. He's super quiet and well-mannered too, which is AWESOME for smaller spaces like an apartment or town house where barking is a big issue. All around a really great dog; basically, an oversized baby.
Per foster 2/23: While getting a harness/leash for Reeses, I had his short term foster wait outside with him in the cold club yard. While playing with him and a toy he did accidentally get her arm instead of the toy. She was swaying back and fourth with the toy and getting him riled up (her words) and he missed the toy. He did not break skin but left a small mark. Reeses was very gently/sweet with all pets/handling so she was not too concerned and still felt comfortable taking him for foster. She just wanted to note it for full disclosure. It seemed unintentional but he might need some training for play manners, and a home without younger children.
Per volunteer 2/17: Reeses Pieces loves toys SO much! He?s a very playful young man who will run around playing with rope toys or stuffies or balls all day - he's not picky about what he plays with as long as he can toss something around. He definitely seems like he?s trying to stay housetrained, and he did his business as soon as we got outside. He takes treats pretty gently (but is more motivated by toys), and seems to know sit. He?s a little jumpy when he gets excited, but he got adorable zoomies running around the yard with a rope toy. He gave me some good wiggles for butt scratches and was pretty easy to walk!
Per staff 2/6: Reeses Pieces got out for some activity time today! He greeted me with soft eyes and mid level wags in kennel, and was patient for leashing. In the office he was friendly with everyone in the room, and greeted everyone with polite sniffs and mid level wags. He took treats very gently and liked beef liver treats best. He sat very nicely, but did not show knowledge of other tricks. RP really enjoyed sniffing around and exploring the room, spending most of his time with his nose to the ground. I think he would really enjoy snuffle matts or scent related enrichment! RP loved booty scratches and did the silliest split when I scratched just right. Overall, he's an easy going guy who loves to get treats and attention!
Per staff 2/5:
KENNEL PRESENTATION: Reeses was standing by the door of his kennel with a loose body, mid level wags, toe taps, and soft eyes. When the handler opened to leash him he sniffed the leash and was patient allowing the handler to leash him easily without issue.
LEASH SKILLS: Pulls moderately
HANDLING: Once in the room Reeses sniffed around the room with mid level wags and wide soft eyes. He explored his surroundings and then greeted all the handlers in the room. He allowed all over petting and was very social with everyone in the room! He allowed all handling even around his head, although we were careful given his medical! He took treats gently and showed knowledge of sit. He doesn?t quite understand personal space and will try to climb into your lap.
PLAY: No interest
TOYS: No interest
Per volunteer 2/4: RP was very wiggly when we approached him! He?s in a stand up crate due to no room in the shelter and i had no issues leashing from there. He walks well with no pulling. He was a bit tense walking by other dogs but we never did a full meet. Takes treats well and knows sit! Takes handling all over and loves pets. He was very loose with handling in the volunteer office with both men and women. No issues returning to crate- very good and sweet boy!
Per staff 2/5: was walking by crate and RP was snarling and charging the front of the crate, hard barking.
Per finder 2/4: Found wandering the street alone no collar, visible injuries. Strangers-gentle but nervous, then friendly. Other animals-curious and friendly. Friendly scared quiet, cried in car, excited to walk
MEDICAL:
On 2/12, Reeses Pieces received a recheck. They noted some redness of his eye, but the bleeding and infection had resolved and his vision had returned. The swelling on his face, head, and ear were also resolved.
On 2/7, Reeses Pieces was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. He tested negative for pneumovirus and has since finished his medication.
During his intake exam on 2/4, Reeses Pieces had some concerns, so he received a vet check. They determined he had right sided head trauma with severe swelling of his right ear and right eye which caused blindness. There were no signs of bone fractures, although the swelling made it difficult to palpate. He was prescribed carprofen and gabapentin for pain, the long lasting ear medication EKT, and neopolydex ointment for his eye.
