Chicken Wing ACCT-A-207760 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Chicken Wing must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3RD at 10AM. Should Chicken Wing?s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Chicken Wing was found as a stray on November 23rd and police officers were able to contain her in their cruiser until our Animal Protection Officers arrived. Chicken Wing has been conflicted with handling, quickly going from loose and wiggly to frozen and fixated. She allows handling on her back but is more sensitive around her ears and legs, pulling away and whipping her head, though she quickly allows handling on her back again. She also seems to have a preference for women but was loose and wiggly with one male staff member. She is stressed at the shelter, but does get zoomies, play bows, and takes treats nicely. Chicken Wing has had conflicted behavior while in our care, and needs more work in a low-stress, supportive environment. Due to her behavioral concerns, Chicken Wing is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.
BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 11/30: Got Chicken Wing out to see how she's doing and to let her out to go potty! She was easy to leash, came right up to the door with semi soft eyes and a neutral tail and was patient for leashing. She walked without too much pulling until we got outside, and then she pulled very strongly. Hold on tight! Once outside she went potty right away, and appeared to me like she might be housetrained! I took handling slow with her since she has escalated quickly in the past. She allowed all over handling, but did give signals that she was uncomfortable when I pet her hind area for too long. She would turn her head (not truly a head whip, just a turn) and give some whale eye and lip licks. As soon as I would stop she would move away and loosen back up. She didn't solicit a ton, but did solicit a couple times by jumping up on me or into my lap. She saw another dog and pulled strongly towards them with some frustration barks, but was able to regulate herself quickly when the dog kept walking by.
I took her inside to see if her behavior would change inside with less stimuli. When we were inside I held the leash for the first few minutes. She allowed all over handling again and continued to give signals when I was pushing her too far. I dropped the leash to cross the barrier and get some treats, and she raced around the room at mach speed, at one point hog tying herself with her leash that was flying behind her! At this point she did begin to concern me a bit, as the more she ran and jumped at me, the more intense her eye contact got and she began to growl as she ran around as well. I grabbed the leash and told her "no, we need to chill" and did not allow her to continue running around and amping herself up. She did not escalate and actually regulated herself very well once the option of continuing her behavior was taken away. She stress panted, but did not escalate and still allowed all over pets after a few minutes to calm down. When it was time to return to kennel she hopped right in without an issue and got a big drink of water.
Overall, Chicken Wing seems to be doing much better with handling, but she is still very stressed. She's trying to regulate herself and make good choices, but she would definitely benefit from a speedy exit from the shelter and some training to help her with her arousal and escalation.
Per volunteer 11/25: Came out of the kennel wiggly and happy. Took her outside immediately and she peed a few times and pooped too, she was holding it. She then did some zoomies and ate some treats and we went back inside. She knows sit and was attentive for treats but once those stopped she did not show much interest in me without the food. After a few minutes I began to touch her. On her back and side were fine, she remained loose with soft eyes and a middle wagging tail. I touched her ears and one has a large sore, she pulled away when I touched it. I then touched a back leg and she did a small head whip. After 15 seconds passed I touched the other leg/foot and she froze and quickly did a more powerful head whip, so I stopped. She went back to bounding around, took treats from me and tolerated petting on her back right away. I did not attempt further handling. Met LT through the fence, she was front with ears up, middle tail wagging loosely, soft eyes and did a lot of vocalizations. Through the fence she got progressively more frustrated and her vocalizations intensified. We walked LT away and when he approached again she mainly ignored him so we decided to try to walk them together. Without the fence she ignored him mostly, but with opportunities to go face-to-face she got frontal facing again, pulled forward with vocalizations with middle tail wagging fast and ears up and alert. She was hard to read and given an opportunity to sniff LT she did not take it, so we ended the interaction.
Per staff 11/25: She was very loose with me and never showed any sign of aggression when I brought her in. Licking my face and soliciting pets. A police officer was able to leash her before I got to the scene and Chicken Wing was very friendly with her. Continues to be very friendly, loose and wiggly with me in her kennel.
Per staff 11/24: Unable to do full check in due to behavior. Per ACAs Chicken was initially wiggly with female handler and when male handler entered she tensed and growled. She warmed up with time but when they tried to muzzle she quickly became reactive snarling and snapping.
11/24 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
In kennel Chicken Wing was at the front and was giving mid level wags and had soft eye contact. She allowed for easy leashing and exited without issue. When returning to kennel she did give some hard stares and lip licks, but was able to be distracted with food and entered the kennel without issue.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally
HANDLING:
In the room Chicken Wing was on leash and ran up to me very wiggly. I pet her head and back given her loose body language and she quickly froze and fixated on me. The other handler pulled her back and she then disengaged and she became wiggly again. We kept her on leash due to her initial behavior and concerns noted by ACAs. She began to run around the room zooming and play bowing. She would run back over and jump on me as well and displayed very wiggly body language. When I would pet her or do handling though she would stiffen quickly and give hard stares, lip licks and appeared very uncomfortable. When a male handler entered she was very avoidant of him, but unreactive. He did not engage with her and we talked for a few minutes. He then tried to take a picture of her from a distance and she began to growl, fixate, and did a small lunge towards him. She was panting heavily and was stressed in the room as well. At this time she was quite conflicted with handling and would switch or escalate quickly.
PLAY:
Engaged in play, jumpy. Did not drop leash.
TOYS:
No interest
Per staff on 11/24: Could not give microchip in due to behavior she did fine for all the other vaccines but once we tried the microchip she tried to turn and bite twice and lost trust in us wasn't able to give Vectra, Pyrantel or Bordetella.
MEDICAL:
During her intake exam on 11/24, Chicken Wing?s ears were clean but had little scabs and she had staining on teeth along the gum line. She had no other medical concerns. She was bright, alert, and responsive, and aggressive.
