About alfa: Alfa ACCT-A-173750 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Alfa must have confirmed placement with an RESCUE PARTNER by Sunday, September 15th at 10 A.M. Should Alfa's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Alfa is a 5-year-old male shepherd who arrived at ACCT as a stray on 9/10. His finder mentioned that he was good on leash but appeared shy and scared. Unfortunately, Alfa is struggling to adjust in the kennel, showing kennel reactive behaviors like baring teeth, growling, and snapping through the bars. He's also has shown to be uncomfortable with handling and has attempted to bite. Due to these concerns, Alfa is timestamped and urgently needs a rescue that can provide him with time to decompress and the proper training to help him thrive. *NEW* Per volunteer on 9/13: When I approached his kennel, he didn't have any reaction to me through the kennel door. But when I opened the door, he retreated to the back, so I had to lower the divider and offer him treats. He was nervous, but seemed ready to leave his kennel, so I was able to leash him with no issue. He set a quick walking pace to the yard; later after we left the yard, his pace was more manageable. This boy is very skinny, and when I moved my leash stopper down, closer to his head, he really shrank back so I don't know what this poor boy experienced before he got to the shelter. In the yard, I didn't try to handle or pet him since this was our first meeting, and he was already a bit skittish with me. For the most part he kept his distance, but once he knew I had treats he ventured close a couple of times. I thought I found a fetch player but he only chased the ball a couple times, and then lost interest. I thought that might be a turning point for him to start to relax, but it wasn't. At least it was nice to see him feeling good enough to attempt to play. He knows sit and usually wasn't too grabby taking the treats. He might be trying to stay housetrained. I tried some stuffed toys and a squeaker, but other than a quick sniff, he moved away from them. I had no issue returning him to his kennel, but I used the clip method to remove my leash, so my hands didn't hover over him. On 9/12 during Alfa's dog meet staff was only able to do a fence meets as he was baring teeth at the other dog from several feet away. He wasn't super barky-reactive, and could walk by other dogs, but did not want them near him. On 9/11 staff noted: I had Alfa out today. He did great with leashing and walked great on the leash. I took him into the front play yard and he loved chasing tennis balls. I filled up the little pool and he was not the biggest fan of the hose but tolerated it! We saw a lot of dogs and he had no reaction just kept on moving. Going back into the kennel was easy as well. He is a great boy! On 9/11 staff noted: Alfa was in his kennel with a neutral/tense body and eyes. He was laying down with semi hard eyes, he was easy to leash and came right out. Pull moderately on the leash. Alfa came out to the yard with a neutral body and eyes. He went to the bathroom and walked around the yard to sniff. He knew how to sit and took treats very nicely. He tolerated touch but did tense up and give the occasion lip licks and hard stares. He did not escalate but showed he was uncomfortable with being pet. The handler overtime was able to pet him more without him reacting. No interest in play or toys. On 9/10 staff noted: When approaching Alfa's kennel he began to bare teeth, growl, and snapped at me through the bars. On 9/10 staff noted: Does NOT like handling, Will attempt to bite you. On 9/10 staff noted: Alfa is a big sweet giant while we where outside he want up to the other dogs and was very nice and wanted to play with them he is a little under weight and could use a good meal and let me touch him all over and would sit when i asked him too. On 9/10, during the initial intake exam, Alfa was noted to have moderate staining on his teeth, and his gums were pink and moist. Otherwise, Alfa appears healthy, bright, alert, and responsive.
