About brenda: **$35 in pledges for rescue that pulls ** BRENDA ACCT-A-134269 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Brenda must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by SATURDAY, APRIL 15TH at 10AM. Should Brenda's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Brenda is an adorable middle-aged pitbull mix brought to ACCT Philly on 3/16/23. While Brenda was initially tense and nervous to be in the shelter, within days she opened up and we got to see her true nature: an affectionate, social, playful dog who is ready to find her fur-ever family! Due to her initial stress level and reactivity in the shelter, Brenda is best suited for a home with no children. Brenda LOVES treats and is very food motivated! Brenda's finder noted that she was friendly, but could also be aggressive and scared. During her intake in the shelter lobby, she was growling at other dogs. A staff member noted: "Was called up to assist with Brenda. Brenda was loose and wiggly, but there were also two other dogs in the intake lobby. Brenda was fixated on them and would occasionally bark and low growl at them. She was easily redirected and was great with all people. Possibly dog reactive, but could have been overwhelmed with all the commotion in the lobby. During her first medical intake exam, Brenda was still stressed and showed some "unable to check in dog, when trying to approach her to check ears and such she growled then jumped up, lunging and snapping towards the staff member. However, later that same day Brenda had already started settling in and was easily removed from her kennel for cleaning time. Staff wrote: "Took out Brenda so the ACAs could clean her kennel. Once outside Brenda had a loose body, wagging tail, and soft eyes. She solicited attention from both handlers and took treats very gently. She wasn't reactive at all outside. We believe her reactivity is all because of the dogs. She is great with people and loves attention. The next day, Brenda was able to be fully examined with no issues! Staff noted she was "friendly and had no apparent medical issues besides discoloration of her teeth. On 3/17, Brenda underwent a behavior evaluation. The evaluator noted: "When approached Brenda was standing in her kennel by her door. When she saw me she gave low tail wags. I attempted to leash, but she dodged it a few times so I had to scatter treats. I was able to leash her and she exited without issue. Returned without issue. Pulls moderately on leash. Needs some work on her leash manners. When we entered the play yard I allowed Brenda to do her own thing before I engaged. Brenda solicited attention with a loose body, wagging tail, and soft eyes. She allowed all over handling and especially liked her back scratched. She didn't show knowledge of 'sit', but took treats gently. If you give her the opportunity, she will be a treat thief. She is a very sweet lady. On 3/23, a volunteer had this to say about their time with Brenda: "Brenda was in front of her kennel and leashed easily. It was 4 days since she was last walked. We took a nice long walk and she pulled minimally. Brenda took treats nicely. She was really fun, animated and spry in the run after our walk with some cute jumps, loose body & open mouth as I sat on the bench. Brenda never ran into me or got mouthy. Just playful. She jumped in the air in a playful way. No issues with her return to kennel. Brenda has had multiple dog meets while at the shelter, and often she approaches the other dogs in a playful and friendly manner! However, she has also had some less social interactions where she was not as receptive. Brenda can be a little bit picky about who she spends her time with, so she is looking for an adopter or rescue who understands this side of her and will take care with any future dog interactions. On 3/22, Brenda was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and started on a course of antibiotics. On 3/31 Brenda was having intermittent to persistent coughing as well as nasal discharge, so medical staff extended her antibiotics and added a second medication to help. During her recheck exam on 4/2, the vet noted she had "no coughing or nasal discharge was observed on visual exam, although respiratory rate was slight to mildly elevated. Appetite appears to remain well, indicating patient is likely receiving prescribed medications. They have continued to monitor Brenda's condition for any changes.
