If you're searching for a specific breed, it's important to know that breed identification in shelters is often based on appearance alone and is frequently inaccurate, especially for mixed-breed dogs. Breed labels are often an educated guess, not a verified fact. A dog labeled as a Labrador mix, for example, may have little Labrador ancestry, while a dog with significant Labrador ancestry may not look like one at all. Because of these issues, many shelters have moved toward describing dogs by observable characteristics (size, coat type, energy level, behavior, training history) rather than making claims about breed.
