About blue: Manhattan Center My name is BLUE. My Animal ID # is A1111663. I am a neutered male black and white labrador retr and am pit bull ter mix. The shelter thinks I am about 1 YEAR 7 MONTHS old. 05/13/2017 WEB MEMO A volunteer writes: Before I met Blue, I was told that he loves his toy, and will grab it from his kennel before coming out for a walk. And he did just that! So cute! Hes a stunningly handsome boy in a coat that gleams with good care, his tail wags, hes playful and fun, has a lively energy, but is also content to lie down with a ball for a good chomp. Surrendered to our care due to personal problems, we are told that hes friendly and outgoing with strangers, lived with an 8yo child and spent time with 4 and 5 year olds, and was relaxed and playful with them, seeming to play more gently with kids, recognizing that they are little people. He lived well with a female pit bull, and plays exuberantly in dog parks.
Blue does not guard his stuff, and even when taking away his toy he thinks its playing. Hes very housetrained, slept in his person?s bed, enjoys going for a run, and of course, playing with toys! Blue showed off his sit, loved playing fetch with me waiting for the throw, pulls on the leash so some leash training will help and/or a harness. Hes happy hanging out on the bench with his ball, and its even better when its in my lap! SO cute. On the way back inside, I let Blue pick another toy from our toy box and he happily entered his kennel with two soft toys. Hes a lively, fun, playful and gorgeous dog who is looking for his equivalent in a human partner. Hes a terrific dog, perfect for an active, fun and playful person or family, so if that describes you, Blue is hoping to meet you today! I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 05/10/2017 from NY 10451, owner surrender reason stated was PERS PROB. 05/21/2017 AT RISK MEMO A1111663 Blue is At Risk for CIRDC MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT 05/21/2017 Exam Type MS NEW URI Medical Rating is 3 C MAJOR CONDITIONS , Behavior Rating is EXPERIENCE, Weight 60.0 LBS. 05/21/17 15:07 S/O: decreased appetite and energy sneezing serous nasal dc A: CIRDC P: move to iso PCR to Idexx 250mg Doxycycline PO SID x14days px: good 05/10/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO 05/10/17 19:38 Blue is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and usually approaches for a good sniff. He lives with an 8 year old and has spent time around 4 and 5 year olds and is always relaxed and playful with them. He plays exuberantly with adults but seems to play more gentle when with kids. He lives with a female Pitbull and is relaxed and friendly with her. He also meets dogs on the street and in the dog park and always plays exuberantly with them. He has never spent time around cats so its unknown how he would react.
Blue has never bitten another animal or human. During loud noises such as thunderstorms, Blue is not bothered and goes about his normal business. He allows his owner to take away his food bowl and bones with no issue and if its a toy being taken, thinks his owner is trying to play. He is not bothered when pulled off of furniture and just tries to get back up onto it. He also does not mind being held from something he wants or when awoken from his slumber. He tolerates baths, brushing and nail trimming. Blue barks when someone knocks on his door but once they walk in, hes friendly with them. Hes friendly when unfamiliar people approach his humans.
Blue is friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. He has a high activity level and when he?s ready to play enjoys fetch with balls (but will not always bring back), tug with stuffed animals and rope, chewing on squeaky toys, and playing chase. His owner loves how loyal and protective he is. When his owner is home, Blue follows him around. Hes kept mostly indoors and sleeps in his owners bed. He?s very house-trained and always makes it outside to go potty on grass. When left home alone for a long time, Blue will start to destroy household items that are left out (ie underwear, socks etc). He?s been crate trained but due to his size did not need it anymore. He enjoys going to the dog park, brisk walks on leash, and going for runs with his owner for exercise. He pulls hard on leash. Blue knows sit, down, stay, leave it, and lets go. He eats Taste of the Wild dry food, about two cups, twice a day. He loves any and all food. On intake, Blue had a lot of energy and was trying to run around and even jump on the admissions counter. He did sit nicely when asked and took treats gently from counselor?s hand. He allowed collaring and sat nicely for pictures. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as Leave it, Sit/Stay, Down are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended. On leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Blue has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Blue may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs, novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
