About kal el: Kal El ACCT-A-214759 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Kal El must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SUNDAY, MARCH 30TH at 10AM. Should Kal El?s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Kal El was found as a stray and brought to the shelter by the police on March 9th. Understandably, he was a little stressed at first, but with time and patience, he?s been opening up and showing us his sweet, playful side. This smart boy loves attention and will happily show off his tricks?especially if treats are involved! When meeting other dogs, he is assertive and doesn?t take corrections well from people or other dogs, so would likely do best with a tolerant dog and slow introductions. Kal El is currently looking for rescue or adoption placement where he can feel safe, continue to build his confidence, and share his affection. Due to his length of stay, Kal El is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. He?s really cute and I loved watching his ears flop as he ran. He loves walking too. I think he appreciated the quiet outside and the nice weather. Kal El loves treats. I needed to distract him with a treat to get the leash on as he was really eager to go outside. He seems like a great dog! Per volunteer 3/22: Loves to run. Per volunteer 3/21: Very sweet boy. Per staff 3/18: Saw a small dog on a walk outside the play yard + got aroused/fixated. Loves food. Sits for treats every time. Per volunteer 3/18: Kal El couldn't wait to get outside. He was easy to leash but eagerly pushed his way out of his kennel. I could understand why. Once we got outside, Kal El went to the bathroom several times. He walked close to my side and spent most of the time curiously sniffing his environment. Once we stopped walking, Kal El approached me for attention. He would sit close to me or spend time in my lap licking my face and enjoying pets and scratches all over. When I offered him a treat, he would sit on command. Sometimes, at the sight of a snack, he would just consecutively show me all the tricks he knows: sit, lie on his belly and lift his paw. He can be snatchy with treats, so I offered him snacks with an open palm. Kal El was nothing but a joy to spend time with. He has a happy and social personality. Kal El hesitated going back to his kennel, but he walked right in after I tossed in some treats. Playgroup 3/17: Extremely assertive and pushy with other dogs. Has an impulse control issue and does not take correction well from people or other dogs. Got into a small altercation with Blue before handlers stepped in. Charged into the yard very assertively and went to neck and mount the other dogs. Per staff 3/16: Behavior memos seem to indicate in an improvement to his sociability with people, but continues to have some overarousal and excitability/reactivity, especially at the sight of other dogs. Visited cageside. Kal El became quite excitable when I approached his kennel. He started barking and jumping up at the kennel door repeatedly, unable to be persuaded down for a few minutes. He then started pacing around his kennel. Per staff 3/16: Did a meet between Kal El and a female dog Boudica. Kal El was frustrated through the fence, but not reactive. We moved to a walk along, but he kept pulling straight towards her and not wanting to walk. He did try to mount her at one point and was making her uncomfortable. We walked to the large playyard and were considering doing a drop leash meet so we could see how they were without leash pressure. He was frustrated at the gate and was steerable to water, but not a shake can. Boudica was in the run but did not want to come near the gate. We put him in the smaller run while considering what to do and he continued to be frustrated. He did respond to the compressed air. His frustration seemed to be turning into reactivity and since Boudica didn't want anything to do with him, we opted to stop and see if he can get out in playgroup another day with a group of dog versus just one dog. Per volunteer 3/15: Approached the kennel and he was laying down and quiet. I talked and he popped up and immediately ate the offered treat with soft eyes, tail middle wagging, ears front and alert, body wiggling when he saw the leash. Easy to leash and pulled when walking outside. Peed immediately outside and soon after pooped. I was able to touch him on his back with the leash a few times without fazing him, tail low, sniffing the ground, ears back. I offered more treats and he takes them gently but with some intensity. He knows sit and hops like a bunny when impatient. Can catch treats well! After some treats we walked more and I touched his side with my hand as he sniffed something and he was unfazed with no reaction and kept sniffing. Inside the eval room he was sniffing all the crates. I offered a rubbed toy which he took and held for a bit and then dropped it. If I kicked it he would pick it up and then drop it again quickly. Sat on cue for treats again and we worked on the "touch" cue (hand target) which he enjoyed. I was able to readjust the leash near his neck to add the clip and he remained with ears forward, tail down and wagging, soft eyes and was easy to return to the kennel and remove the leash with the clip. Per staff 3/15: No issues removing from kennel. Walked well on leash. We went into the volunteer office briefly and he was sniffing around. Was loose and wiggly most of the time. Brought him outside. He peed. When a little dog came out behind us he was focusing on her and pulling towards her, vocalizing. Was able to be redirected but kept looking back towards her. No issues other than that - will need further assessment to determine prey drive vs possible dog reactivity. Per staff 3/13: Dog initially is hyperactive and very food motivated, but appears to not like being touched. While nurse was scanning for microchip, he lunged at hand, but did not latch on. Per staff 3/12: For the second time, medical staff attempted to bring Kal El out of the kennel for the doctor to examine him. Each time, he lunges at the kennel, making it unsafe to leash and examine him. Per staff 3/9: Unable to check in PT, went to give first vaccine with fear free and food motivation method and PT lunged with the slightest touch, other than getting poked with vaccines PT does let you pet him and give treats. Per staff 3/9: Was called for Kal El as he was growling in the cop car. He was nervous of the leash but once secured was loose, wiggly, and cuddly. MEDICAL: On 3/19, Kal El was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. He tested negative for pneumovirus and is on medication until 4/1. On 3/16, his trazodone was extended for an additional 7 days and he was prescribed gabapentin until further notice. During another intake attempt on 3/13, Kal El was only able to receive his vaccines and a visual exam due to his behavior. He was thin and had hair loss throughout his body. During his intake exam on 3/9, staff noted, ?PT is emaciated but has round belly, old wounds on face please be CAUTIOUS with PT will lunge with needles, will eat treats, loves peanut butter.? He was prescribed trazodone due to his behavior. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
