About nova: My name is NOVA and I'm approximately 4 years and 5 months old female american staff. I have been at the Downey Animal Care Center since February 4, 2025.
Meet Nova, Nova is available for public adoption, with a Known History of Aggression disclosure form. Nova has low energy level and is Required to be in an Adult Only Home, no other dogs are recommended. Nova would benefit best from continued training in basic manners and socialization.
During playgroup assessment Nova had a tense body, low ears, closed mouth, concerned gaze, and a low tail. She appeared wary of the runner, but she slowly approached to sniff the runner?s hand through the fence when it was presented. When the runner tried to leash Nova, she retreated to the back of her kennel. While she kept her distance, the runner tossed the leash until it landed over Nova?s head. It took some coaxing and firm pressure on the leash to guide her out of the kennel. Nova bypassed her neighbors with a tense body while the runner led the way to the catch pen. Once in the catch, Nova maintained a tense body posture while the runner slowly placed the collar around her neck. Nova was no interested to greet the dogs at the barrier, instead she gave them a hard stare. After she entered the yard, Nova stood with a stiff body and her tail tucked in while she was welcomed by some of the dogs. After the introduction, the handler was forced to move Nova as she remained in the same spot, blocking the entrance to the yard. Nova continued to isolate herself from everyone else, avoiding eye contact. One of the handler?s try coaxing her with gentle petting but her body was not able to soften up. The remainder of the session, she did not move or attempted to interact with anyone. Before she was returned to her kennel, she was shifted to the side yard to begin her handling assessment. Nova would benefit from continued socialization in a calm yard that will allow her to pace herself and gradually build her confidence.
During handling assessment, Nova was set in an empty yard to decompress before conducting the assessment. The handler slowly approached her and lightly petted her on the head as a form of introduction. While she remained next to the handler, her ears, mouth, stomach, tail, and front and back legs were examined. Nova was observant as the handler examined different areas of her body. Nova remained uncomfortable through the session with a tense body, hackles up, ears up, low tail, closed mouth, and a concerned gaze. Once the assessment concluded, she was walked back to her kennel. Nova requires a slow approach due to her fearful demeanor. Providing a calm environment is ideal for Nova during her adaptation processes.
