About pee wee: Pee Wee ACCT-A-212735 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Pee Wee must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH at 10AM. Should Pee Wee?s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Pee Wee came to the shelter on February 5th after being left behind when his owner was evicted. He was reportedly in the yard for three days, during which someone provided him with food and water. Pee Wee has been extremely fearful and avoidant, both in his yard and at the shelter. Even with the same people taking him out on different days, his behavior has not improved. He is also a flight risk in the playyards, so isn?t able to have time to explore with the leash dropped. The first time we saw Pee Wee wag his tail was during a dog meet, so a confident dog may help him open up. Due to his behavior concerns and risk of further decline in the shelter, Pee Wee is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner. Although shy he allowed me and another volunteer to pet him. He took treats very nicely from both of us. He was nervous to go outside so we took another dog out with him (Aries) as they already met before and did well. He truly didn?t want to be outside and kept jumping at the door to return back in so we brought him back in. Him and Aries were fine together outside as they would sniff each other and walk away. We had no issues returning him to kennel. Per volunteer 2/10: Shy, warms up and then seeks out attention by rubbing against you + coming back after pets. Leaking poop. Per volunteer 2/9: Spend time in volunteer office - definitely relaxing - sniffed around, accepted pets, even gave a couple face licks. Peed + pooped while in office. Per staff 2/9: Brought Pee Wee out for some activity time today. He was fearful on his bed and remained curled up while I reached in to leash him. In the room he remained very fearful and avoidant of all handlers. He tried to hide in places in the room and for a majority of the time would stay under the desk avoiding all handlers. He allowed me to lightly touch him, but would flinch and dart away appearing uncomfortable. He was tolerant to touch, but had no interest in interaction and did not open up at all. Per staff 2/8: Pee Wee came out for activity time today. In the room, Pee Wee went right under the desk to hide and stayed there trembling. He refused to be near either of the handlers and darted from both desks whenever one of us were near him. The handler called him with fresh pet and he approached but retreated quickly back under the desk. The handler made a trail of treats which lead into her hand. He ended up slowly coming forward and eating some out of her hand before realizing that he was closer to her and retreating again. He was tolerant, but just looked away and refused to acknowledge both handlers. He was very uncomfortable with touch, but he remained tolerant. Per volunteer 2/8: He mainly tried to get back to kennel. Per volunteer 2/8: Did not do too hot coming out; leashed w/ a ton of patience and treats. Per volunteer 2/7: Fearful buddy. A helper dog friend helps - go slow w/ him while he adjusts. Per staff 2/7: Pee Wee got out for some one on one time today. He was on the opposite side of kennel eating some wet food when I approached. He did not come forward, so I lowered the divider and went around. Pee Wee was very fearful, and backed himself up against the farther wall. He did some leash dodging, so I had to lasso him. One secured he came right out, and was fearful of the dogs barking in his row. In the office he tried to hide under the desk and stay as far away from me as possible. I offered some of the wet food he was eating in kennel, but he wouldn't eat it near me. I gave him some space and placed the food a bit farther form me, and after a few minutes he began to eat. I called him and he approached me with semi hard eyes and sniffed me, but retreated quickly back under the desk, as far form me as he could manage. I tried using treats as a lure but he wasn't interested in them. When I tried to go around the desk and get closer he would run to the other side, so I held the leash and tried some handling. He was tolerant, but just looked away and refused to acknowledge me. He was very uncomfortable being near me or being touched by me, but he remained tolerant. I decided to take him back to kennel instead of stress him out more, and he gave me no issues returning. Overall, Pee Wee is terrified and shut down, but is trying his best to be a good boy. 2/6 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Pee Wee was laying on his bed and was curled up trembling when I approached. He had a tense body and semi hard eyes, appearing very fearful. When I opened and crouched down he remained curled up but would not move and gave me some hard stares. He remained in place while I reached in and leashed him. Once secured he kept coming forward and retreating and then laid back down on the bed again. I moved the bed to the edge of kennel and he peered out but was scared to exit. I gave him a little pop of leash pressure and he hopped out. No issues returning LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally, fearful HANDLING : In the room Pee Wee was very scared and shutdown. He kept a low tail, tense trembling body and semi hard eyes when interacting with me. He stood in the middle of the room and was not confident enough to explore. Nor did he want to come closer to me at all. I sat down, giving him lots of space and speaking to him softly. He continued to stand in the middle of the room and just stare at me. He never reacted or escalated with anything, but was very uncomfortable with any interaction. He tolerated me petting his back in small spurts but would lower his body away from me. PLAY: No interest TOYS: Perked up at squeaky noises, but would not engage Per staff 2/5: Dog was scared and tense through entire interaction and running as officers tried to corral it, officer was able to leash the dog but had to muzzle him, dog doesn't seem aggressive, dog shut down after it was muzzled. MEDICAL: On 2/10, Pee Wee was able to be checked in. He appeared to be in good health overall. On 2/9, Pee Wee was prescribed a course of gabapentin for fear. He was also prescribed Fortiflora due to having some blood in his stool. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
