About spider: Spider ACCT-A-175189 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Spider must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10TH at 10AM. Should Spider's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Spider is a young dog who is housetrained, knows "sit," and loves fetch! He initially came to the shelter as a stray in September and was adopted, but was returned on December 4th due to ongoing issues with the other dog in the household. While at the shelter in September, Spider had good dog meets, but once in a home environment, he became possessive over food and toys, which led to fights with the other dog. Because of this, he would likely do best in a single dog home. He has also shown reactivity towards dogs during this stay at the shelter. The owner described him as a very loving and cuddly dog, with no issues other than the fights with their other dog. He is looking for a home without children. Spider is a strong, energetic dog who is extremely food motivated and knows "sit," but he lacks manners and will need guidance and training. Due to his behavioral concerns, Spider is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter. BEHAVIOR: Per volunteer 12/8: I took Spider out yesterday for the event. He was easy to leash came to the front of his kennel excited to exit. He was fine walking through the kennels i held him close to me he exited the building quickly. There was a dog on the left side of us he didn't noticed we continued walking off property to get him some steps in he does walk fast some pulling peed a couple of time. He showed me he does know sit. Back on site to get a toy there were a few dogs around but a good distance, he's very handler and treat focused i kept treating him and he wouldn't pay attention to the other two dogs. At one point he saw one closer and he did fixated a bit but i gave his leash a tug and treated him he would focus on me. He went into the toy truck greeting all the people so happily, he picked a toy and we walked back no issues. Per volunteer 12/7: Medium-high energy, pulls, dog reactive. Per volunteer 12/7: High energy. Visited Santa. Sweet, loves people, knows sit, pulls. Per staff 12/6: High energy, pulls a lot. Per staff on 12/5: Called the owner to verify info for Spider. She said that the fights that occurred in the home were not started by Spider specifically and that it was both dogs instigating the conflict. She said she would not describe Spider as the aggressor and that they just did not get along and had tension. She also stated that Spider is an amazing dog and that he loves to cuddle! 12/5 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KNOWN HISTORY: Owned, returned due to dog fights KENNEL PRESENTATION: Spider was standing by the door with wide dilated eyes and a neutral body. He sniffed the leash and widened his eyes but allowed for easy leashing still and exited without issue. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls strongly HANDLING: In the room Spider had a lot of energy! He lacked manners and would dart around, jump on us and just wanted to run. He allowed all handling but was very energetic and all over the palace, getting distracted or aroused quickly. He is VERY food motivated and showed knowledge of sit, but lacked patience and would try to snatch them quickly. When telling him commands though and being stern he would take them gently, just needs some guidance. PLAY: Engages in play TOYS: Released willingly or would do trades. Per staff on 12/4: Owner stated Spider and her resident dog fight over toys and food, otherwise Spider is okay. Per owner 12/4: Very cuddly, very lovable, but very possessive not good sharing w/ other dogs. Fully housebroken. High energy. Yes has bitten another animal; fight over food, puncture wounds to face, fighting over toys, ruptured ear flap. Knows sit and stay. Pulls a bit on leash. Very excited towards strangers. Possessive towards other dogs. Per staff 12/3: Injury owner sustained from fight was popping their wrist when trying to separate them. They say no human was bitten. Per owner 12/3: No human was bitten, but Spider bit my other dog's ear and it filled with blood and had to be drained twice, also my other dog has gotten some puncture wounds on his neck and face as well as some scratches on his eyelid. These injuries have happened over a course of about 5 different fighting incidents?. 1 time it was because they were both eating dinner and Spider finished first and went over to my other dog and started growling and then they began fighting, because of this we started feeding them separately. Another time Spider was chewing on a toy and my dog walked over and was sniffing and they locked eyes and went after each other, because of this we removed the chew toys. Then 3 other times they began fighting for no apparent reason... There was no food or toys involved. They simply locked eyes and started fighting. It was during one of these fights that my other dog's ear was injured and received, I would say all together, 5 or 6 puncture wounds as well as scratches on his eye lid. Then last night we were all in bed and Spider started growling at my other dog for no apparent reason, so we just separated them for the night. As for the wounds I do not have pictures, but they did break skin and took a week or so to heal up. As for my other dog's ear, it's still healing and he now has cauliflower ear forming. Spider has not been injured during any of the fights except for a couple scratches that didn't really even bleed? Honestly, he is a very loving dog. He just seems to be overprotective of his things and his people. He just doesn't seem to want to share attention or things, but he is VERY loving with us? I think he would be great as an only dog. Per owner 12/1: There has been a number of fights between Spider and our other dog. These fights have caused injuries to both our dog and ourselves requiring doctor and vet visits. We need to surrender Spider as soon as possible before there are more injuries. Spider has been to the vet and has all his vaccinations and a clean bill of health. Per volunteer 9/26: Super easy for leashing! He walks like a dream on leash, loose leash and checking in with me. He hadn't been out for several days so I was expecting him to by hyper but he was pretty low energy. Outside he enjoyed exploring some toys but not super playful. he still has a cold though so maybe just not feeling great. He loves treats and takes them very gently! He took pets from me all over, very chill and tolerant. Loose body language the whole time we were out. Such a sweet easy boy! 9/18 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KNOWN HISTORY: Stray KENNEL PRESENTATION: Spider was curled up on his bed, he came up when he was called with neutral eyes and mid level wags. He was easily leashed and came right out. LEASH SKILLS: Pull minimally/moderately HANDLING: Spider came outside with a wagging tail and neutral eyes. He is a very goofy and playful boy at times and allows all handling. He sniffed around the room and even jumped up for affection and cuddles. He kept his tail wagging and his head up. He took treats very nicely and is a little snatchy on occasion. He is a very social dog and took treats and toys from everyone. He is very curious and showed interest in everyone in the yard. PLAY Engaged in play TOYS: Trades for toys Per staff 9/17: May prefer women over men. Did pretty good during his intake and so far is the sweetest boy in his kennel. Very food motivated. Great at catching food when tossed! Per staff 9/17: Put on evaluate due to his behavior in the intake lobby, Spider was totally fine and relaxed while in the lobby, LS Mike was able to pet and scan the dog for a microchip (microchip was negative) but when the security walked in the door the dog freaked out and was reactive towards the guard and started hard barking and lunging at him, had to call behavior up. MEDICAL: During his intake exam on 12/4, Spider was noted to be in good health. His eyes, ears, nose, and coat were clean and his teeth had just mild staining. He was bright, alert, and responsive. On 9/23, Spider was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. Spider received his intake exam at the time of his neuter on 9/20. His eyes, ears, and nose were clean. His teeth were white and he had no issues with his skin or coat. He was bright, alert, responsive, and friendly.
