Good Dog Meet (in Shelter)

Tabitha ACCT-A-207871 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Tabitha must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by MONDAY, DECEMBER 2ND at 10AM. Should Tabitha?s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Tabitha was found by police as a stray on 11/25 after her owner reportedly passed away. Neighbors reported that she was trying to bite people. In the shelter, Tabitha exhibits signs of fear and defensiveness, such as barking, growling, and showing tense body language. Though she avoids eye contact and is stiff and growls when touched, she has shown some improvement, becoming more tolerant of handling, especially when holding a toy or being given treats. She was well behaved for her medical intake and also had a good dog meet at the shelter. Due to her behavioral concerns, Tabitha is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.
BEHAVIOR:
Per Staff 12/1:
Took Tabitha out tonight with the intention of letting her hang out in the foster office for a bit. She howled at me from her kennel and let out one snarl, but immediately took treats. I opened the door to continue giving treats and try to leash her. She dodged it once but I was able to secure her when she put her head through the loop for a treat. We went outside and she went potty immediately. She enjoyed sniffing around the yard and was a little hesitant to come back inside but with a little tug she followed me! She wanted to go back to the TTA room but with encouragement I got her into the foster office. She would not take treats outside or in the office, and just kept going back to the door gesturing that she wanted to go back to the kennel. So I respected her decision and took her back! I had no issues returning her using the clip method, and she immediately took treats again once in the kennel. Seems to be her safe space here. It's hard for her to learn to trust in this environment because she seems overwhelmed by the noises and the shelter in general, but I see so much potential in this girl!
Per volunteer 11/29: Rescue-only Tabitha is very vocal in her kennel and when I approached, she bared her teeth and barked. However, I opened her kennel door about 2 inches, showed my leash and when she saw it, she calmed down, allowed me to loop her and she easily left her kennel. No more issues after that. Unfortunately she has a soft mass on her hind-end that will need medical care.
Outside, she is nervous and hesitant, but wasn't difficult to walk; she pulled at times, but nothing too strong.
She had no interest in treats outside, but inside she thoroughly enjoyed the Thanksgiving pup-loaf.
It was cold outside and there was no unoccupied room for us, so I took her into the office. She wasn't comfortable with the people, didn't interact with any, and was ready to leave immediately. She stood by the door, but did take treats from me, didn?t know sit, and had no interest in toys.
Once I returned her to her kennel, I very slowly sat down on the edge and she joined me. She gave me some kisses, I gave her pets, and she would nudge my hand for more pets when I would stop. When I went to give her treats, she stood in front of me while I sat on the kennel edge ? after I gave her treats, she put her head in my lap for pets.
She is upset in her kennel, but trying to be brave and really seems to want love.
Per staff 11/29: As soon as I walked up to her kennel she began barking and came up to the front of the kennel. Her bark was quiet and raspy, but she was hard barking at me.
Per staff 11/28: Tabitha came out for activity time today. Tabitha was laying on her bed growling and hard barking when she saw the handler. She stopped growling when the handler reached in with the leash and was secured. She slowly walked into the eval room and was looking at her surroundings. She took some treats nicely and tolerated some pets. She tried to ignore the people in the room, was very tense and stiff and tried to avoid all eye contact. She is very frozen and aloof today. She wasn't lip licking or wagging -- but was more tolerant to touch than before.
Per staff 11/27: Bright, alert, and responsive, friendly with some food offered. Tolerated vaccines without restraint, muzzle placed for microchip.
11/27 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Police pick up
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Tabitha was at the front with hackles raised, hard barking, wide tense eyes, and baring teeth. The handler opened the kneel slightly to show the leash, she quieted down and was able to be lasso'd and once secured she gave a little growling and remained tense.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulled minimally
HANDLING:
In the room, Tabitha was very tense and vigilant of the handlers. She gave a lot of side eyes and sniffed but would then tense up and do lots of lip licking. The handler offered her some treats to try and calm her down and she took them pretty snatchy but would come back up to the handler for more. After eating some treats, she tolerated some pets but was very tense and still. The handler scratched her neck and head and her mouth got very tight and gave a little growl towards the handler. She knew sit and took treats a little nicer that time. She will approach you but randomly get tense and lip lick near your legs and hands. She was a lot more tolerant and less tense with a ball/toy in her mouth and gave a lot of low wags.
PLAY:
Interest
TOYS:
Really likes squeaky toys ? perked up to the sound ? took possession. She really likes balls and will bring them back for you, likes when you throw it for her
Per staff 11/25: Dog was hard barking while in the police car. When taken out and brought into the building and the control pole used by cop was taken off, she calmed down and didn't bark or act aggressively in any way.
Per staff 11/25: Police stated the neighbors said the dog owner is dead and the dog has been roaming for the past few days. He said the dog owner may have lived at the address the dog was picked up from the front of. Neighbors said the dog was running around trying to bite people.
Per police form 11/25: Responded to above location for a loose dog. Upon arrival police secured the dog with help of neighbor. The dog was transported to ACCT.
MEDICAL:
During her intake exam on 11/27, Tabitha?s eyes, nose, and ears were clean. She had significant wear and staining on her teeth and reasonably clean skin. Tabitha is an intact female and had a large soft mass on the exterior of her vulva.
