About starry moonz: Starry Moonz ACCT-A-175709 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Starry Moonz must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16TH, at 10AM. Should Starry Moonz's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Starry Moonz is a calm and independent dog who is looking for an adult-only home where he can take things at his own pace. In a quiet environment, Starry is aloof but curious, spending most of his time calmly exploring his surroundings. Starry is a dog who values his personal space and prefers to keep to himself, making him a great fit for a home where he can relax without the hustle and bustle of young children or other pets. He's low-maintenance, gentle, and simply looking for a peaceful place to call home.
Starry Moonz was found running loose in a park along with another dog on 9/23. The finder noted that he was friendly and didn't have any concerns besides being very hungry and having fleas. When meeting other dogs at the shelter, Starry Moonz has shown reactive behaviors, so he is looking to be the only pet in the home. If you're looking for a quiet and independent companion, Starry Moonz may be the perfect fit for you! Due to his length of stay at the shelter, Starry Moonz is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or an adopter with an adult-only home and no other pets.
BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 10/12: Starry Moonz had another dog meet today. We tried a walk along, and after a few minutes Starry Moonz could be within 5-10 feet of the other dog without barking and reacting. We progressed to a face meet since Starry had calmed down, but he was tense and very still throughout the meet. He sniffed the other dog, but when the dog oh so slightly moved forward to sniff Starry Moonz, he did a small lunge and hard bark. He snapped a bit as he barked, but I could not tell if it was an intentional air snap or just him hard barking.
I think with very slow intros Starry Moonz could have a doggie friend, but with his reactivity and reaction to just being sniffed, I think he would do best as the only dog in the home. Someone would have to put a lot of time in and HEAVILY stress slow intros and decompression if they wanted to introduce him to a resident dog.
Per staff 10/11: For how reactive Starry Moonz was towards the other dogs, he was very easy to handle. He wasn't pulling much at all and I had no trouble controlling him. He did pull towards a few of the kennels that we passed by. He was easy to remove from kennel and to put back even after he was all worked up.
Per staff 10/11: Helped film and supervise a meet between Starry Moonz and Kilo today. Starry Moonz was reactive in the kennel building once he was removed from kennel. He saw Kilo walking about 25 feet ahead of him, and began puling and hard barking at him. When we got outside we tried a fence meet first, and Starry Moonz was very reactive. He ran to the fence, hard barking and snapping through the bars at the other dog. Kilo would not even approach Starry Moonz due to his behavior, and we decided not to do a face to face due to Starry Moonz's behavior.
Per volunteer 9/27: Starry Moonz was really easy going for me! He was no trouble to leash and to take outside. I let Starry Moonz set our pace and he is an athlete! He enjoyed running at a great pace and he really enjoyed our time outside together. He is a handsome guy! Very smart and easy to walk on a leash.
Per volunteer 9/26: Starry Moonz was barking in his kennel when I approached, but in fairness to him- he's also surrounded by a lot of barky buddies! He's a little scared and darty on leash. He curled up next to me underneath the bench when another dog came outside. He was looking at the dog and being vigilant but didn't make any effort to get closer ( and didn't react in any other way). Showed off that he knew "sit and took treats nicely. Was easy to bring back to the kennel and loves peanut butter biscuits.
9/24 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Starry was standing at the front of the kennel with neutral body language and soft eye contact. He was patient for leashing and exited the kennel without issue, no issues returning to kennel.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulled strongly, would try to fence fight other dogs walking through the kennels.
HANDLING:
Starry was calm in the room and somewhat aloof towards us. He gave some spurts of wags when speaking to him, but would then go back to exploring his surroundings. He allowed all handling without any issues from all handlers present in the room, but did not lean in or actively solicit attention. No interest in treats, after some time he walked over towards a corner and layed down- preferred sticking to himself.
PLAY:
No interest
TOYS:
No interest
COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Blue
MEDICAL:
On 9/30, Starry Moonz was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or a "doggy cold" and was prescribed a course of doxycycline. He tested positive for pneumovirus, but has since tested negative. He was also evaluated for his hair loss. He was given a flea preventative and prescribed Douxo S3 Mousse for his skin.
During his intake exam on 9/23, Starry Moonz's eyes, ears, and nose were clear. His teeth were very clean, with pink and moist gums. He had live fleas and thinning hair on his back and legs. He was bright, alert, and responsive. Staff noted: Hair thinning on back and legs. Unable to give capstar due to behavior (wouldn't eat treats and seemed fearful), held off on Vectra.
