About jarel: Jarel ACCT-A-172514 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Jarel must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by Friday, August 30th at 10 A.M. Should Jarel's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging an animal. Meet Jarel. Jarel is a young dog who came to ACCT on 8/25 as a stray. Since arriving at ACCT Jarel has been displaying signs of anxiety, nervousness, and discomfort in the shelter environment. He is cautious and slow to warm up to people and situations, and when interacting with him he will give hard stares and avoidance, although he has not been overtly reactive. He tolerates light handling, but does not seek it out or show signs of enjoying it, and his response to other dogs suggests he might be uncomfortable around them as well at this time (see notes below). He is food motivated though and has the potential to build positive associations through food and slow, gentle interactions. Due to Jarel's fear at this time he is only available to rescue partners and is looking for someone experienced to work with him and help him build confidence. 8/28 per staff: Jarel came out for activity time today. Jarel was lip licking when he came in. When the handler touched his backside he slowly head whipped and hard stared. When he was given treats he accepted them very gently and nicely but once the handler tried to pet him again he hard stared at and showed discomfort. Jarel moved very slowly around the room, looking around the room at the handlers. He will walk away when he feels uncomfortable. He eats treats from hand very gently and tolerates touch but gives some signals of being very unsure. 8/27 per staff: When we got to the office Jarel was nervous and fairly shutdown but was calm with all handler and allowed interaction. He seemed a bit more relaxed though than yesterday and was very tolerant with all handlers in the room, sniffing all three of us before sitting down near me with a neutral body. He remained very shutdown and aloof during our time today again. He allowed petting of his head and back but did not lean in and at times would give semi hard stares but remained tolerant. Today he was very food motivated and gently took treats from us when offered. We tried a dog meet to see if that would help him warm up, but during the meet he was very fixated and forward, dilated pupils and focused on the other dog. He did not escalate but did not seem comfortable. When the handler left with the dog I lightly touched his back and he turned around and hard stared at me, did not react further. 8/26 per staff: Jarel was curled up on his bed and looked up with semi hard/semi neutral eyes. The handler threw the leash for him to sniff and he remained laying down while continuing to sniff the leash. He did not move but was easily lassoed. Once secured he slowly stood up and walked out of the kennel. Jarel came into the eval room very hesitant and cautious. He was looking around and walked very slowly, taking very small steps. He eventually laid down on the floor near the handlers feet and remained very calm (could be tired or stressed- not much of a reaction- very aloof). He had a tense body but is very tolerant of handling. He did not lean in or solicit and when interacting with him he remained aloof and avoidant but never reactive. 8/25 per staff: Very skittish, nervous but not reactive, too stressed for intake currently, good on leash.
