About cassidy: Cassidy ACCT-A-170055 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavior concerns & lack of space for incoming dogs, and length of stay. Cassidy must have confirmed placement with an RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by Wednesday, August 21st at 10 A.M. Should Cassidy's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Cassidy is a 4-year-old male who came to ACCT as a stray after being picked up by animal protection officers on 7/27. He was found tied to a church alongside another dog named Cassandra. Upon arrival, Cassidy exhibited signs of nervousness, including hard barking, growling, and slight teeth baring, which were suspected to be due to kennel reactivity. Since being here, staff have observed significant improvement. As of 8/16, Cassidy has not displayed those initial signs and has been easily leashed and handled when getting in and out of the kennel. Cassidy needs a home without small animals, as he has attacked a cat while at ACCT, see notes below from 8/10. He may do well in a home with other dogs, but a very slow introduction will be necessary. Cassidy has also shown barrier reactivity towards other dogs, so his new family will need to work on managing this behavior. He would benefit from being in an adult-only home or with children aged 12 and older, as he can be snatchy with treats. Treats should be given with an open palm or tossed to him. Due to Cassidy's length of stay and the behavior concerns he has exhibited at ACCT, he is timestamped and urgently needs a home that can provide both the training he requires and the love and attention he deserves. NEW! Per Volunteer 8/18/24: Very easy for leashing and easy to handle when I had him out today! He walks very well with no pulling. He had a good meet with shepherd Romeo although Romeo wasn't interested in meeting him, but Cassidy respected his cues well. He knows sit and takes treats super gently! Took pets all over. When we went out to the play yard he was pretty chill and low energy. I took him to the monthly photoshoot and he was so well behaved- he let me put a bandana on him no problem. Took pets from all of us in the photoshoot room and sat nicely for treats. When returning to kennel he got playfully mouthy with my hand for a second but then no other issues. Good boy! On 8/16 staff noted- Took Cassidy out and he was great being leashed and getting out the kennel but he immediately went across and attempted to fence fight with his neighboring dog but I was able to distract and get him moving. Once outside he immediately pottied and explored. We attempted a fence meet with Dallas and he was barrier reactive, barking and jumping up on the fence but was able to be redirected with a slight tug. We decided to bring Dallas around and Cassidy did what appeared to be a play bow but he was tense but did not react. I walked Cassidy around for a bit and he saw a lot of dogs walking by and was interested but continued to do his own thing. We tried a face to face meet with London and he did not react but was very interested in meeting and sniffing him but pulled very hard toward London. After the meet I took him in and when we got to his kennel he again tried to fence fight with the neighboring dog but was redirected and he went right into his kennel with no further issues. On 8/16 staff notes on walk sheet- Very good boy. Super happy dog On 8/13 staff notes on walk sheet- The best boy just wants love. Walks great on leash and super sweet On 8/10 staff noted- Cassidy was on walk with a staff member who stated that when she stopped to tie her shoe near the trailers/colony cat area, Cassidy attacked colony cat Honey, resulting in deep puncture wounds and possible spinal trauma (diagnostics pending). In addition to no cats in the home, adopters should be cautioned about Cassidy's prey drive when outdoors. On 8/3 staff notes on walk sheet- Good sweet boy. loves head pets/rubs and baby talk On 7/31 Cassidy came down with an upper respiratory infection and was started on Doxycycline. PCR results came back negative. On 7/28 staff noted- Cassidy was in a crate when I approached. He stood by the door with wide, soft eyes, ears pinned back, tail low wagging, and toes doing to taps. He licked his lips in excitement/frustration as I unlocked the door, but was patient for leashing and came right out. Pulls minimally on the leash. When we got to the eval room I sat down in a chair and Cassidy hopped his front paws into my lap right away. He seemed more nervous at this point, and his eyes were a lot harder. He seemed conflicted, so I pushed him down and started giving him some treats. He is VERY snatchy, so use an open palm or toss treats for him, he will snatch your fingers! With some time and treats, Cassidy's eyes softened and his body loosened. His tail came into a mid level and was wagging when we made eye contact. I got him to zoom around with some toys, but the play was short lived. He seemed nervous to really open up and play, and it was like he'd relax and loosen up, interact and play, then remember that he doesn't know me, and he would get uncomfortable and tense up. He allowed all handling, but would get tense and give hard eye contact at seemingly random times. If I backed off he would always relax and get loose again. I tested his resource guarding since he is so snatchy, and he showed no concerning signs! He allowed the pointer to touch him and the food, he allowed my hand near the food, and allowed me to pet him while eating. I did notice that if I lifted my hands/arms too quickly he would cower away like I was going to hit him, this is probably why it's hard for Cassidy to build trust. He's a little conflicted, but sweet and wants to trust. During play it was short lived but he ran around with some toys. Chased a tennis ball but cowered away from the sound of squeaky toys. On 7/27 staff noted- Took Cassidy out for a walk. He presented at the front of his crate with relaxed face and body, giving gentle mid-level wags. Had no issue at the crate; he remained neutral / slightly wiggly for several minutes while I attempted to take some pictures. Leashed without issue. Though there were several dogs crated nearby, observed no reactivity toward them exiting the crate or returning to it later -- just curious, pro-social sniffs and tail wags. Walked very well through the adoptions floor, sticking to my side and waiting patiently as I grabbed some treats (he accepted a couple happily before we got outdoors). Peed as soon as we got outside -- for 10-20 seconds -- then continued marking intermittently while on the walk. Continued showing good leash manners: not pulling, checking in. No vocalizing throughout; saw some adopters walking out to the parking lot and perked up to observe them for a bit but didn't bark, pull, etc. Sat nicely for treats. No issue returning to his crate: I grabbed a couple frozen peanut butter milkbone sammiches, tossed them in first, and he hopped right in. On 7/27 staff noted- Dog was showing signs of nervousness and hard barking, growling, and slightly bearing teeth. Use caution when taking dog out of the crate. May just be kennel reactive but doesn't seem nice. On 7/27 during the initial intake exam Cassidy was noted to have slightly red eyes. His ears were dirty with little scabbing. Gums pink and moist little staining on teeth. Some redness between nose and mouth. Came in with a dirty coat but no live fleas. He was noted to be bright, alert, responsive and a little nervous but very food motivated VIDEOS- Petting Cassidy: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cxNXNi7TL_k?feature=share Cassidy knows sit!: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/B_g1NjHtrpM?feature=share Cassidy and Dallas Dog Meet: https://youtube.com/shorts/Hg6NyBCXLbE Cassidy and London Dog Meet: https://youtube.com/shorts/CLgacUE4au8?feature=share Leashing Cassidy 7.27 https://youtube.com/shorts/c5xtV7v__Vg?feature=shared Pets for Cassidy https://youtube.com/shorts/iNI-krK0WFY?feature=share Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
