#1 I was the first volunteer to go and meet Crockett for the day. When I approached his kennel there was a blanket covering the entire door. I peeled it back and Crockett immediately popped up and began to bark, growl, and bare his teeth at me. Because I suspected he was scared I spent some time tossing him some treats and baby talking him. This resulted in him becoming quieter as he ate them. However when I went to put the blanket back he went back to snarling at me. I asked a nearby ACT what he thought and he said that Crockett needs an experienced handler but that he was more bark than bite. Crockett had been cowering from him when he tried to open the kennel door. I personally didn?t feel comfortable with leashing him up myself due to his size and behavior. However, two other volunteers got him out together so I was able to encounter Crockett again a little bit later. Outside he was obviously scared and unsure of his surroundings but didn?t show aggression and seemed to really bond with his handler. He did a quick temp test with Reggie and let out a low growl so that combined with his other behavior leads me to believe he should be the only dog in the home. #2 When approaching Crockett at his kennel he was snarling and barking with what could appear to be aggression; however, I was able to win him over with treats and opened his kennel door and easily able to leash him. Once on leash he bonded immediately with myself and another volunteer. He is extremely anxious and has not had much human socialization. He will need to be with an experienced handler who will have patience and show him how to trust. This guys has a stunning black coat, thin, and skittish. He walked phenomenally on leash, so that's what makes him confusing. Showed interest in other dogs. Finally at the end allowed us to give him pets. If I had to guess this boy may have been abused and should not be around kids or young teens. Again, needs to with someone who is an experienced handler and/or GSD trainer. I see so much potential with this poor guy.
