𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 Gumbo was conked out asleep when I first walked by him and by the time I?d stopped to take him for a spin, Gumbo had woken up and was still curled up lounging on his bedding. He began shivering and his eyes got so big as soon as I opened the door. I tossed him a few treats which he looked at and sniffed but didn?t eat. He would reach his head toward my outstretched hand but never got close enough to touch me or allow me to pet him. I was able to leash him up without much difficulty and we took a quick walk around the ward. Poor Gumbo is so terrified he would start and stop, stand up on his hind legs and attempt to grab the leash with his front paws, and/or bump his head into the feeding troughs as he looked for a place to get away from all the attention. He did stop to smell at several dogs - maybe not so much in greeting but pleas for assistance? - and during these interactions, he had a tucked tail and tense body posture. I ended up picking him up and carrying him outside, and he just went stiff as a board. Once in a kennel run, he found a spot near the front and didn?t move. He ducked his head when I reached to put a bandana on and wouldn?t eat the treats I offered him. He perked up a bit - his ears relaxed from their pulled back position and he started doing head tilts - when I brought out a squeaky plush toy. Gumbo is super sweet, just so terribly terrified here at BARC that he will need time to decompress in a quiet safe environment. He is already neutered and HW-.
